Family Dentistry in North Andover, MA
As your partner in helping you and each member of your family enjoy a happy and healthy smile, our team of dentists, dental hygienists and assistants emphasize preventive dentistry. As the name suggests, preventive dentistry aims to avoid dental problems altogether or at the very least to treat them early. Doing so benefits you in two ways. First, by treating an issue sooner rather than later we can stop a small problem from becoming a big problem. Secondly, big dental problems can mean big dental bills. With these two important considerations in mind, Willows Dental Group offers a comprehensive menu of preventive dentistry services.
Dental Exam and Cleanings
In addition to your at-home oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing, Our team would like to see you and your family at least twice each year for a dental exam and cleaning. At these checkups, we will clean your teeth and remove plaque, gauge the health of your gums and other soft tissue, visually check for signs of tooth decay, complete an oral cancer screening and take digital x-rays when necessary. Digital x-rays require 90 percent less radiation that standard x-rays, they can be viewed immediately from a computer screen stationed chairside and they can be easily stored on computer or forwarded to another dental health professional.
In addition to digital x-rays, we also use the DIAGNOdent™ dental laser to safely and effectively check for cavities and other microscopic changes on the surface of your teeth. DIAGNOdent uses a light to detect any concerns and can even recognize decay underneath a crown.
Dental Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
Two other services that are frequently components of a dental checkup are dental sealants and fluoride treatments. Dental sealants create a solid barrier of protection between the biting surface of your deeply grooved molars and the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Willows Dental usually recommends sealants for children with newly erupted permanent teeth, but sealants can protect the teeth of teenagers and adults, too.
Sealants start out as a clear liquid that is “painted” to the vulnerable chewing surfaces of your teeth. Once hardened with a curing light, sealants can help prevent cavities for years.
Fluoride is a mineral that has been proven to strengthen the enamel of your teeth. And with strong enamel, you stand a better chance of winning the battle against the bacteria that can linger on teeth and cause decay, which leads to cavities. In addition, fluoride treatments can:
- Help stop the advance of gum disease
- Ease the irritation of dentures and partials
- Prevent bad breath
- Control decalcification on teeth of people wearing braces
- Block the buildup of plaque around crowns, bridges and dental implants
Because of all these benefits, Willows Dental Group provides beneficial fluoride treatments after every regular cleaning.
Other Preventive Dentistry Services
If you or another member of your family has bruxism—teeth grinding and clenching, our dentists can prescribe a bite guard. Worn at night while you sleep, a bite guard protects your teeth from the excessive wear and tear that can result from the abnormal pressure of grinding and clenching.
In some people, bruxism also causes migraine headaches. For these patients, We can provide relief with the NTI-TSS device, a small mouthpiece that is worn on your front in order to keep your upper and lower molars separated. This device can help alleviate the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ.
